Tele-Health and Tele-Audiology delivery service models

Presenter:
Jeanette Fitzke, AuD, CCC-A, F-AAA
Field Clinical Specialist/Audiologist, Otometrics

With the healthcare delivery model in constant evolution, we will discuss how we can reinforce the Audiologists’ role in hearing healthcare through a telehealth model.  This course will help you determine which form of telehealth delivery model might suit your clinic goals.  In addition, we will review setting up your clinic, reviewing equipment options, and the use of Otometrics equipment to accomplish this goal.

It is essential to have the appropriate equipment that allows for computer control via remote options and telecommunication methods established depending on the desire to provide diagnostic, hearing aid, or vestibular services.  We will navigate through the issues to evaluate in this delivery method such as competency of the professional at the remote location and licensure restrictions and current laws that are in place that review the guidelines around delivery of tele-audiology.

We will show how many audiologists will be able to consider the use of tele-audiology methods to provide for a different avenue of accessibility of diagnosis, treatment or counseling for the patient.

Introduction to Otoscan – the Digital Ear Scanning System

Presenter:
Don D. Kim, AuD
Market Development Manager for Otoscan, Otometrics

Otoscan is a comprehensive ear scanning solution that provides a new, safe and easy way to make digital impressions for custom in-the-ear pieces such as earmolds and hearing aids. The scanning software transforms ear scans into digital image files that are ready to be used in 3D modeling production.

The human ear is a complex component of the human anatomy.  As such, creating a digital scan of the ear which includes a dark and potentially curvy and narrow ear canal can be a significant technical challenge. Otoscan provides a solution to the barriers of a successful ear scan but its application does require a basic understanding of how Otoscan works as well as hands-on practice to master the scanning technique.

In addition to the validated patient benefits, we will review the overall operational and business benefits that Otoscan can provide to a clinic.  For instance, a new workflow to the patient evaluation path could lead to increased business efficiencies and patient satisfaction.  Compared to the traditionally passive silicone impression process, digital ear scanning could be converted to an active counseling tools that could help optimize the hearing aid selection and purchase process.

Tympin’ ain’t easy: Pediatric Immittance Test Battery
Presenters:
Dawn Violetto Au.D
Lindsay Bondurant Ph.D

Due to Early Hearing Detection and Intervention programs, 98% of babies born in the United States have their hearing screened shortly after birth. As a result, audiologists are seeing a greater number of very young infants than ever before, and it is essential that providers in a variety of settings be familiar with basic pediatric protocols so that appropriate referrals can be made when indicated. An integral part of the diagnostic test battery should be a comprehensive immittance battery, which is helpful in identifying middle ear disorders that may contribute to hearing loss.

Hearing Aid Verification: You owe it to your patients!
Presenter:
Dr. H. Gustav Mueller, Ph.D. Audiologist

Research clearly shows that patient benefit and satisfaction only can be optimized when they are fitted using validated prescriptive methods. This only can be accomplished by establishing the correct SPL in the ear canal. There is no Plan B. This course will review the research evidence showing why real-ear verification is necessary, and outlining the potential ethical and medical-legal ramifications of using some other aimless fitting approach.

The vHIT is an integral part of a complete vestibular examination of patients with symptoms of dizziness. By assessing the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex, we can gain key vestibular information. However, this protocol is intended for use in accordance with the clinical diagnosis and is the first and fundamental step of the patient evaluation. This webinar reviews the use of vHIT in patients with recurrent vertigo and with chronic dizziness.
